The Official City of Abbotsford tartan is the brainchild of long-time community supporter Christine Wiebe. While the City of Abbotsford already had a flag and a coat of arms, Christine felt more could be done to enhance the culture and identity of the area.
After first approaching then-Mayor George Peary and doing some research and online design work, Christine reached out to the University of the Fraser Valley for help. She teamed up with local student and designer Samantha Merritt, who worked with her to create the tartan.
Tartan kilts and clothing were featured in the local Canada Day parade, including on Abbotsford West MLA and Minister of Health Michael de Jong, and MLA for Abbotsford South John van Dongen. The Official City of Abbotsford Tartan was also showcased during the official ceremonies at Canada Day.
Abbotsford City Councillors have recognized that the tartan can be used to create clothing and is a tremendous tool for tourism and branding of the area; accordingly, Christine is now offering quality, bespoke items sewn from the tartan. If you are interested in having clothing or other items made using it, please contact Christine to discuss your ideas.
